MENTAL HEALTH OUTREACHES WITH MAKERERE LAW SOCIETY

Gaps in the mental health of Makerere University students of Law have in recent times become apparent due to worrying suicide and dropout rates. The most recent of these was the loss of one of the students, the late Natasha Byejeru to suicide in 2021.

Even after 50 years of its existence, the School of Law Makerere does not have a compendium on the mental health issues of the student population to assist in the policy making and effective response to the glaring mental health concerns of the students.

There is no single comprehensive document or activity for the concerned stakeholders to shape the conversation around this issue.

An opportunity to fill this gap is presented by the presence of a spurred and intentional team of student leaders on the Makerere Law Society cabinet that is ready to undertake this project to its successful end.

Heart to Heart Spaces works in partnership with Makerere Law Society to help combat increasing mental health cases by giving mental health talks.

Heart to Heart Spaces is further working on a mental health proposal to help raise funds to enable the society fund mental health clinic, sponsor therapy sessions and advocate for better learning environments that will help students improve their mental health.
